Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar thinks the team’s failure to defend totals without Jasprit Bumrah has been a problem for them for some time and that the management needs to make some adjustments.
Team India did not have the best of beginnings in the current three-match T20I series against Australia as the hosts were unable to hang on to 208 runs in Mohali and the bowlers were unable to put forth a valiant effort. Only Axar Patel was successful in getting wickets and being thrifty at the same time. It will be intriguing to see if Jasprit Bumrah plays in the important second T20I after sitting out the first T20I.
Sunil Gavaskar thinks that the team has struggled to defend totals without Jasprit Bumrah for some time. Additionally, management needs to alter.
“This is India’s weakness. This problem is not new. For a few years now, they have struggled to defend without Jasprit Bumrah. When Bumrah is there, they can protect the score, but without him, they lose even 200-plus totals. Having stated that, we need to think of a fix. If not, it might be detrimental to them later on. Gavaskar stated on Sports Tak following the first Twenty20 International between Australia and India.
In response to a query regarding Jasprit Bumrah, Gavaskar stated, “Regarding his (Bumrah’s) fitness, I believe that the team management wants him to be 100% fit before picking him for India’s XI because he is such a key team member. He might present a show in Nagpur.
But think about this. The Indian team excels when they are pursuing a goal and winning games. On the other hand, it works the other way around. They are still lacking the necessary bowling between overs 16 and 20. The team consistently loses because of this, he added.
The second T20I game between India and Australia will take place on Friday in Nagpur.
