Sania Mirza’s Heartfelt Farewell Letter to Wimbledon Following Mixed Doubles Semifinal Loss: “I Will Miss You”
After losing in the semifinals of the mixed doubles competition, Sania Mirza said goodbye to Wimbledon with an emotional Instagram post.
Sania Mirza, a tennis prodigy from India, said an emotional farewell to the Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday after losing in the mixed doubles semifinal. She had already retired from the women’s doubles match. Sania previously won the women’s doubles competition; she did it in 2015, and this year’s semi-final showing is her best to date.
Sania had previously stated that this would be her final season competing on the WTA Tour and that she would then hang up her tennis racquets. After her loss Sania rushed to Instagram and posted an emotional goodbye to Wimbledon.
“Sport exhausts you mentally, physically, and emotionally.
The successes and the losses. The long hours of toil and the restless nights following crushing defeats. But it provides you with so much in return that not many other “jobs” can, and for that, I will always be grateful. The effort we put out is worth it in the end. It wasn’t meant to be this time at Wimbledon, but you have been nothing less than spectacular???? I’ve had the distinction of competing and winning here for the past 20 years. I’ll miss you, though.

In the women’s doubles competition, Mirza, a former world number one, has won the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open once each. She also won the mixed doubles competition at the Australian, French, and US Opens once each.
At the 2016 Olympic Games, she also lost in the mixed doubles semifinals.
“I have the exact same emotions. So I believe it came as a bit of a shock to everyone, and I later admitted that I shouldn’t have made the announcement—about retiring at the conclusion of this season—so soon and instead should have done so closer to the year’s finish “Sania stated.
“I received a ton of messages, and tennis will always play a significant role in my life. I’m appreciative of the experiences and successes I’ve experienced. Although I do intend to finish by year’s end, I am giving it my all and have a long year ahead of me “said Sania.
