“As I reflect on my career, I can see that managing my energy and maximizing my mental energy was the key to my success and longevity as a professional. I used to spend a lot of time worrying, pondering, and thinking about my game even when I wasn’t playing. I ultimately saw that wasn’t necessarily improving my game or hurting my sport. So I desired a break and almost found another life outside of cricket. David added in the podcast.
“I was never going to be like Viru, like Virender Sehwag, who found that switching off was much easier because of his personality outside of the game. I would never be able to perform at that level. However, I did start to see the cautionary indications. I knew I had to find a way to stop it, but you also need to take care of your mental wellbeing. It all came down to you acknowledging that this was as important to you as those extra practices and workouts. If you completed all of that but still couldn’t unwind psychologically, you won’t have the energy to play the game. After discovering it three or four years into my job, I began to try to shut off much more, and that really benefited me.
