Mahendra Singh Dhoni said on Friday that he will play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023 because he wants to say goodbye to his fans in Chennai and also go to different cities for away matches to thank his fans for their support.

The Chennai Super Kings captain, who turns 41 in July, did not rule out returning to the IPL in 2024, stating that “you can’t forecast what will happen two years down the line.”
During the toss for his team’s final IPL 2022 match against Rajasthan Royals at the Brabourne Stadium on Friday, Dhoni reaffirmed his availability for next year.
Dhoni, who has led Chennai Super Kings to four IPL victories since their establishment in 2008, relinquished captaincy just days before the start of IPL 2022, but had to take over from Ravindra Jadeja midway through this edition of the IPL as the club struggled to perform.

When asked about the likelihood of returning to the IPL next year, the former India captain, who has led his country to world cup victories, said he will absolutely return for one simple reason: he wants to play in front of the Chennai fans again.
“It’s for one simple reason: it would be unjust to not play in Chennai and express gratitude. Mumbai is a location where I have received a lot of love and devotion both as a team and as an individual. However, it would be unkind to CSK fans.

“Hopefully, next year, there will be a possibility for the teams to go so that we can say thank you to all the different places where we will be playing games at different venues,” Dhoni said.
He then went on to say that 2023 might not be his final year in the IPL.
“Whether this will be my final year or not is a big question since we can’t really forecast something two years down the road,” Dhoni added. “But I’ll surely be trying hard to come back strong next year.”
It’s unclear whether he’ll return as CSK captain next year or step down like he did this year. That would be obvious if CSK were to find someone capable of leading the team.
