Mitchell Marsh scored a tenacious half-century on Monday. While Shardul Thakur’s four-wicket haul helped Delhi Capitals keep their playoff hopes alive with a 17-run victory over Punjab Kings. Marsh, who started the season with a hip ailment and then tested positive for coronavirus, struck his second consecutive fifty of the season to lead his team to a 159-7 victory over Punjab. At the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Shardul Thakur took 4/36 in four overs to restrict the opposition to 142-9.

While Delhi’s IPL performance was near-perfect, the 2020 runners-up faltered at the outset, with David Warner removed for a golden duck against Liam Livingstone. For the first time in nine years, the Australian opener conceded a straightforward catch to a backward point on the very first ball of the IPL.

Interestingly, Warner was not going to take strike before Livingstone got the ball to open the game. The Capitals opener decided at the last minute to take the strike from his partner, Sarfaraz Khan, who was due to open the innings.

Warner, on the other hand, sliced Livingstone’s thrown-together delivery straight to Rahul Chahar. He returned to the dugout without bothering the umpires.

With two wickets each, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav destroyed the opposition. Mayank Agarwal was dismissed for zero by Axar, while Livingstone was dismissed for three by Kuldeep. With his 34-ball 44, Jitesh Sharma gave Delhi a fright until Shardul removed him in the 18th over. Warner nearly sealed the victory for his team with a low catch at long-off.

The victory put Delhi in contention for a top-four playoff position, while Punjab’s aspirations were dashed. In terms of run-rate, Delhi has moved up to fourth place, passing Royal Challengers Bangalore. To be in contention for the final playoff berth, Delhi and Bangalore must win their final games.
